Original hand puppet sets of Punch & Judy and Kasper theatre built as children’s toys from the first half of the 20th century.
Like other toys, they re-created in small scale the real-life delights of the world in which children lived. There were usually six to twelve figures in a set and some came with stages.
Most of the puppets were made in Germany, like the puppets in this exhibition, hand-carved in wood or shaped with papier mâché, and hand painted, with exaggerated features.
